La Distribución Empírica Del Tamaño De Las Ciudades En España, 1900-2001. ¿Quién Verifica La Ley De Zipf?

Abstract

Este trabajo contribuye a la literatura empírica sobre la distribución del tamaño de las ciudades, articulada en torno a la ley de Zipf, utilizando la evidencia proporcionada por los municipios españoles a lo largo del siglo XX. Comienza con una serie de objeciones a la base de datos de poblaciones municipales más frecuentemente utilizada por los estudiosos en este campo y propone una fuente alternativa para todos los años censales del siglo XX y 2001. Continúa examinando el concepto de “ciudad”, para terminar decantándose por el de Área Urbana propuesto en el Atlas de Áreas Urbanas del Ministerio de Fomento, que desborda (en algunos casos) los lindes municipales. Por último, se realiza un contraste de la ley de Zipf a partir de una generalización de la distribución de Pareto, si bien también se ofrecen estimaciones de la relación rango-tamaño con las últimas técnicas disponibles. Al contrario que la evidencia mostrada en otros trabajos, el contraste propuesto no permite rechazar dicha ley con generalidad para el concepto de “ciudad” utilizado.
