Nuevos números: ¿Un mundo nuevo a la vista?

Abstract

Este artículo examina el “Informe del Programa de Comparación Internacional 2005. Resultados finales” (publicado en febrero de 2008). Dicho Informe ofrece nuevas estimaciones de la renta relativa de 146 países, dibujando así un nuevo cuadro del mundo. Nuestro objetivo es analizar las novedades reveladas por las nuevas cifras en lo que concierne al poder relativo de las naciones, a las comparaciones sobre el grado de bienestar de los diversos países, a la distribución global de la renta y a la naturaleza de los problemas ecológicos del mundo y su solución. En cierto medida la pregunta planteada es: ¿Presenta esta nueva cuantificación de variables macroeconómicas algún paralelismo con -digamos- la codificacion del genoma humano o se trata, más bien, de otra nueva fuente de datos económicos controvertidos?
