Globalización del sector farmacéutico

Abstract

En las últimas décadas, con la consolidación de las políticas neoliberales, el sector farmacéutico ha experimentado una gran transformación, llevando a cabo importantes fusiones y adquisiciones, y convirtiéndose en uno de los sectores más rentables de la economía. El año 1994 es decisivo porque se crea la Organización Mundial del Comercio y se reconoce el derecho de propiedad intelectual, también para los medicamentos. La generalización del sistema internacional de patentes, ha sido la base en la que se ha sustentado el modelo seguido, favoreciendo claramente el crecimiento del sector. En los países desarrollados, el gasto en medicamentos crece de forma preocupante. Las consecuencias del aumento del gasto farmacéutico, siendo negativas para los sistemas nacionales de salud en el mundo desarrollado, son catastróficas para los países más desfavorecidos y para los ciudadanos sin cobertura sanitaria.
