El mito de los 400 mil abortos en Colombia

Abstract

Durante años se ha dicho que en Colombia se practican 400 mil abortos clandestinos anuales, sin ninguna justificación y contra toda evidencia. Este artículo contrasta la validez de esa cifra. Primero explora cuál pudo ser la fuente inicial y luego muestra que ese cálculo apresurado es inconsistente con un estudio riguroso realizado en 1992. Después revisa otras fuentes que contradicen esa cifra; expone las dificultades para estimar las actividades ilegales y critica uno de los métodos empleados. Por último, estima el rango de abortos anuales a partir de las encuestas nacionales de demografía y salud.
