Abstract

[eng] Bénédicte Gastineau. — Becoming parents in the rural areas of Madagascar. Changes underway in the province of Antananarivo With regard to the relationship between men and women, Madagascar appears to be an exception. Numerous indicators show that gender relations are more egalitarian than in most African countries. The article presents an analysis of maternity and paternity in the rural areas of Antananarivo province. It shows that a traditional mode of social and economic organisation is still in place, favouring concerted action among men and women in their sexual, matrimonial and reproductive relationships. Responsibility for pregnancies before marriage, decisions about family size and contraception costs are shared by couples.
