Abstract

[eng] A non utilitarian economic model of fertility and female labor force participation. Warren C. Sanderson. This paper presents and analyses a new economic model of fertilty and labor force behavior. The model iy in the spirit of Willis [1973] and incorporates : i) joint household production ; ii) non-constant returns to scale in household production ; iii) endogenous determination of the wives' market wage rates ; and iv) explicit consideration of the husbands hours of work in the labor force. The model follows the nonutilitarian approach to economic modeling developed in Becker [1962] and Sanderson 11974], and can produce simultaneous implications concerning labor force participation rates, hours of work, rates of voluntary childlessness, and fertility.
