Abstract

[eng] A considerable amount of research is under way on this subject, particularly at the Toulouse Institute of Labour Studies (Institut d'Etudes de l'Emploi de Toulouse). The article covers three questions: Can the needs of firms be forecast ? There is a certain vagueness about the term « need » ; models of sectors will have to be constructed showing just ; how particular developments may occur in labour structure. Professions and training. Analysis of what is meant by « professions » and « training Systems ». The nomenclature of employment is partly influenced by the structure of training Systems. Choice of profession. Forecasting according to professions will be of little use unless individuel ambitions (desired course of careers) are compatible with the actual course of careers, taking account of the competition that exists between the various spheres of training.
