Abstract

[eng] For a variety of historical reasons the agricultural sector in the UK is generally distinguished from that in the rest of Western Europe by its large scale of farming and its relative dependence on hired labour. This paper outlines briefly the policy and economic background of the past 20 years and developments in structures. It then considers in some detail the industry's labour force, including its size, composition, remuneration, hours of work and general conditions of employment. Finally, the prospects over the next few years are considered briefly.
