Abstract

[eng] Production costs for cereals in the European Community using the most relevant data which are available for France, Germany, Italy and the UK, are compared with average production costs in the United States, as published by the USDA. In spite of the many approximations involved in such comparisons and of the influence of exchange rates between European currencies and the US dollar which have been very volatile in past years, there is little doubt that efficient wheat farmers, particularly from France and the UK, can compete with their US counterparts. For maize, by contrast, the US cost advantage is clear.
