Abstract

[eng] In order to set up a sound agricultural policy, at least an order of magnitude for the milk supply response to price is needed. For instance, a negative milk price supply elasticity would make irrelevant any policy designed to cut back the oversupply through a decline in prices. But estimating this elasticity is not easy. Various methods have been applied recently in each of the main EEC member states : aggregating the results of linear programming models for typical farms, estimating different kinds of production functions, using regression analysis. None of them is fully satisfactory. Results are highly method dependent, and, therefore, not reliable. However, there is evidence that the elasticity is always positive, and significantly higher for some countries (such as Italy) than for others (such as the Netherlands).
