Abstract

[eng] The paper aims to identify the role of the proximity constraint on interfirm R & D cooperations within the pharmaceutical sector. First, it emphasizes on the cognitive and spatial dimensions underlying the innovation process viabilisation. The interaction of these two dimensions drives to the emergence of specific cooperations allowing multiple combinations of competencies between firms and their different partners. In a second time, the cooperation modalities which are more frequently used in the industry are analysed in relation with the different interplays of these two dimensions. From this panoramic study emerge specific sectoral configurations : preference for cooperations avoiding the joint management of competencies and releasing the proximity constraint; rise of horizontal cooperations getting along with the development process.
