Entry and the dynamics of profit margins

Abstract

L'article suggère in fine quelques précautions à prendre quant à l'interprétation des résultats recensés. [eng] This article reviews some recent empirical work that attempts to measure the effects of entry — actual or potential — on price-cost margins. Three separate models of entry induced market dynamics are successively considered: (i) simple structural models, which do not allow potential entry to have any effects on margins; (ii) "models of profit persistance", which allow both actual and potential entry to affect profits, but in such a way as to make it impossible to measure their separate effects; (iii) a full structural model, which off-sets that last inconvenience.. Empirical work with all three different models suggests that the effect of entry on profit margins is fairly modest.. The conclusion of the paper summarizes these results and offers some caveats concerning their interpretation.
