Abstract

[eng] This study to identify the determinants of the differences observed between the 19 activities of the Belgian manufacturing industry, by means of a principal components analysis applied, annually, to a set of 18 financial ratios.. A comparison of the successive results (1977-1983) clearly shows the permanence of inter-industry disparities. Especially the main dimensions (financial structure and profitability) are found to be the same during the whole observation period.. This stability in time obtained when firms are grouped by activity is one of the most essential advantages of sectorial studies over classifications based upon other criteria.
