Abstract

[eng] This article is divided into three parts. The first presents the main debates on the American industrial decline. The author argues that the American military effort, the lack of any comprehensive industrial policy and high labor costs are among the principal factors explaining the relative industrial decline of the United States. This decline is measured in the second part of the article by means of several statistical series. The third part analyzes the response of the American government to the decreasing competitiviness of the country's industry. Non tarif protectionism, bailouts and several measures aiming at the reduction of labor costs have been the main response of the American State in order to counter the industrial decline.
