Abstract

[eng] Auto multinationales do no invest in developing countries just to benefit from low wages. As a matter of fact, production costs are higher in developing countries, where economies of scale cannot be reaped. The political will of developing countries is the major determinant of these investments. Integration (import-substitution) strategies have generally failed, except in Brazil. They are increasingly substituted or complemented with compensation strategies, that make more economic sense.
