Abstract
[eng] Abstract The expansion of female religious congregations in nineteenth-century Germany has only recently come under historical attention. Like in France, however, these congregations underwent an unprecedented growth from the 1840s onwards: totalling less than a hundred sisters in 1815, they numbered about 60000 members in 1913. This expansion took three forms: some congregations were inspired by foreign models such as the community of the Sœurs de la Charité de Strasbourg; others were the produce of the reform of older communities; others still originated in specifically German initiatives. While all congregation members had a secular activity, the majority of them were employed in sanitary or social work. However, Bavarian elementary schools still employed sisters at the beginning of the twentieth century, and female congregations were very active in catholic secondary schooling throughout the Reich. The map of this continent long forgotten by German religious history still deserves to be refined through further studies.
