Abstract

[eng] Abstract Just before the Revolution, there were a large number of ponds on the Brie plateau to the southeast of Meaux, forty kilometres east of Paris. These stretches of water were owned by the abbeys and the Parisian nobility, who were the only ones privileged enough and in a financial position to be able to afford them. Sizeable initial investment was required to create a pond and the resource was also expensive to exploit. The fish from the ponds (carp and pike) was essentially for the well-to-do classes in the capital to eat during Lent. These ponds were on the wane by the end of the Ancien Régime and, in Brie at least, the Revolution hastened their disappearance. There were none left at all by 1830, i.e. just before the start of the agricultural revolution.
