Abstract
[eng] Abstract The rapid decay of birth rate in France has led historians to research its main causes. However, it is necessary to state precisely that this decay varied from region to region. The case of Anjou is an exemplary of this disparity. As birth rate, fecundity and illegitimacy reveal a deep contrast between west and east of this province. Such a disparity allows to examine the links between demographic behaviour and cultural variables. In that respect Catholicism appears the main factor to have been in play not only as far as demographic vitality is concerned. A solid religious earnestness feeling has also permitted to maintain a low level of illegitimacy and reversely.
