Abstract

[eng] Abstract The assassination of Duke Alessandro dei Medici in January 1537 sparks a major political crisis in Florence. His young successor Cosimo Ist must face up to the military threat posed by opponents of the Medici regime (the fuorusciti) and the agitation of the Tuscan communities. In towns such as Pistoia, Borgo San Sepolcro or Castrocaro, the repeated troubles - anti-Medici plots, factional fighting, refusal of obedience - alarm the Florentine magistrates, who dread a provincial uprising. Ever the less suspect communities endure with difficulty the unaccustomed military constraints and the rigorous fiscal demands imposed by Florence on the basis of being in a state of war. The defeat of the fuorusciti, the maintenance of a continuous dialogue with subject communities and the mobilisation of all its representative allow the Medici regime to disentangle itself little by little from this crisis of authority.
