Abstract

[eng] Abstract The financial crisis of 1931 cast doubt on the plans for monetary cooperation in Europe that had emerged from the debates of the 1920s and had led to the creation of the Bank for International Settlements. This author shows us the limits that were placed on the cooperation between the central banks that were called to the aid of ailing Hungary in the summer of 1931. She examines the reservations that were expressed by the Bank of France and its governor, Mr. Moret, despite the pressure exerted by the BIS and the French government, which was anxious to prevent any inordinate weakening of an area of such strategic importance and, indeed, to strengthen its political presence in that area.
