Abstract

[eng] Abstract Murcia, central part of the dry Southeast of Spain, plays the role of a military borderland against Islam until 1492. In this repulsive environment, the extremely feeble population is concentrated on some fortified sites each of which dominates a little huerta. The remaining space is left to the most extensive activities. Between 1500 and 1800 this population grows ten times on the basis of an agricultural progress which transforms the regional landscape in two successives cycles. In the XVIth century the silk production success leads to the development of big hydraulic in the valleys while, after the XVIIth century crisis, the need for selfsubsistence explains an intensive campaign of steppe ploughing together with marshland draining for sanitary reasons.
