Abstract

[eng] Abstract The author of is study is currently preparing a thesis on the search for the identity of the Marquesas people. He presents the first steps taken by French administrators in, to use an expression of the islands, "the land of manking". The goals set by the French government for a named Dupetit-Thomas, were to build, a naval base and a prison. Dupetit-Thomas went beyond this to lay down, in the same year, 1842, a protectorate on Winward and Leeward Islands. The recently formed, new colony of Marquesas, was simply forgetten. There was no coherent plan for the archipelago, despite the expensive prison, that was built to accomodate only three deportees, before being abandonned. Only a group of Catholic missionaries stayed, assuring a stubborn and permanent presence within a population seemingly doomed to disappear.
