Abstract

[eng] Abstract The edict of August 8th 1779, conceived and worded by Necker, represents an important stage in the process of servile (or « mainmortable ») regims, and more generally of seignorial rights, in France. Assuredly its concrete results are note convincing at all : bad application on Crown lands, strong opposition from the Parlement of Besançon, common indifference among the private landlords. But its weight isn't to be disregarded, far from it. First, in the judiciary and literary spheres, it gave a decisive impulse to the campaign against « mainmorte ». And above all, by suppressing the « droit de suite », it opened the « revolutionary » movement of abolition of feudalism, movement which would be entirely achieved only in 1793.
