Abstract

[eng] Abstract Through the 19th century, the outskirts of Milan had a changing administrative history. The town disposed of an economic specifity which is highlighted in accounts written during this time. The area known as Corpi santi is made up of a vast majority of nuclear families, whereas the centre of the town is characterised by a high proportion of families with no immediate relations in the close by. A large number of the "suburbanites " chose to incorporate themselves into the population of the city centre. They therefore had a generally more inferior social background than their counterparts who were born in the town, which is shown by the fact that they chose to live on the fringes of the town, and particularly by a characteristic demographic trend, as the women from the Corpi santi married early and had many children. The "suburbanites" record of imperfect integration can nevertheless be contested, as not only did their estimated life-span match that of the natives, but they also often managed to adopt the same demographic rate very quickly.
