Abstract

[eng] Abstract Coming into being in 1949, as a result of the setting up a separate société anonyme (limited liability company) of the civil engineering department of Schneider et Cie, Compagnie Industrielle de Travaux (CITRA), under the leadership of Charles Schneider, the last of the «maîtres de forges» — the «forgemas- ters» at the head of major iron and steel firms, that had effectively controlled the industry for a century or more — , CITRA experienced a period of heavy expansion, owing to the success of its technological diversification drive, and to spectacular breakthroughs on foreign markets, especially in English-speeking countries. The firm built up a major group around itself, introducing new technologies, with the assistance of its own research department. However, the emphasis laid on growth rather than profitability, led the firm to become overextended. Absorbed, as from 1969, into Empain group, it experienced, from 1970, a serious financial crisis, which was to bring about its merger with Spie Batignolles, two years later.
