Abstract

[eng] Abstract The carreer of Edmond Bartissol illustrates how, without actually qualifying as an engineer, it was possible, in the nineteeth century, to make one's mark in civil engineering. After a period spent working for the Suez Canal contruction site, Bartissol entered into a partnership with Duparchy to set up a civil engineering firm, going on to provide Portugal with railways, also filing out in that country the leixœs harbour, where he brought in new technology, before extending his activités to Spain and Mozambique. Concurrently engaged in an albeit intermittent political career, he also equipped the French departement of Basses- Pyrénées hydroelectric facilities, and founded the firm of aperitif wines which his name to this day, leaving a considerable estate at the end of his life.
