Abstract
[eng] Abstract « Soil and space : enigmas for the economist ». This opinion from a respected present-day analyst of rent provides the starting point for this article. It actually takes the form not of empirical observations but an examination of some of the economic, anthropological and sociological models employed to explain the morphogenesis of urban value. The conclusion reached is that no immediately determinant relation, in whatever direction, can be established between urban society and its spatial context : although contemporary with each other their evolution occurs in different timescales. Adoption of a properly historical perspective is found to be an effective safeguard against simplistic determinisms and circular analyses. Conclusion ?
