Abstract

[eng] Abstract The mechanisms of spatial arbitrage and of spatial interactions between markets are investigated by analysing the short-term fluctuations of wheat prices on different markets. The following questions are examined in the paper : relationship between spatial price differentials and levels of transport costs ; variation in price differentials and in price correlations with respect to inter-market distances ; increases in the degree of market integration during the 19th century ; characterization of dominant versus satellite markets. Throughout the paper, three different levels are considered corresponding to regional, national and international trade ; thereby, we are able to put our conclusions on a sound and fairly general basis.
