Abstract

[eng] Abstract The French government's decision in favour of a military operation against Egypt resulted from a combination of different interests, which took place somewhat by accident, rather than from a global and coherent strategy. Once their decision had been taken, the French stuck to it and displayed more vigour than the British, largely because they did not have the same wide interests in the Middle East and did not realize as sharply what was at stake in that region. However, for lack of resources, they had to fall into line with British military planning, which was much slower. There were many squabbles between British and French high commands, which had very different approaches. Failure was the logical penalty for an ill-prepared expedition, which proves once again how difficult it is for a coalition to work.
