Abstract

[eng] Abstract The specificities of the Geneva conference are stressed, but the conference is mainly analyzed as an example of diplomatic co-operation between Britain and France, during an international crisis. The role of individuals is also emphasized, particularly of Anthony Eden and P. Mendès-France. The worsening military situation in Indochina obliged the Western powers to accept a négociation with the Vietnamese communists, Red China and the U.S.S.R., though J. Foster Dulles was extremely reluctant. This process is described, and then the vicissitudes at the conference ; the important role of british policy in the reaching of an agreement is stressed. Still, the settlement was ambiguous and Indochina was to enjoy only a brief interlude of peace.
