Abstract

[eng] Abstract The construction of the railways brought an end to a precarious situation in Spain where it was more difficult to rely on coastal trade than in Portugal. More rapid and more regular, trains were virtually indispensable in Spain. Building the railway lines mobilized a large number of workers, most of whom were peasants, consumed a considerable amount of wood (for the railway ties and cars), and required massive importations of rails and locomotives : the steel industry of both countries was not able to meet the demand, given its limited development and lack of competitiveness.
