Abstract

[eng] Abstract The essay reviews current research and calls attention to several of the basic characteristics of the Belgian railway system. The system was above all motivated by commercial and international interests, for the State, as promoter from the 1830's on, determined the system's configuration, its organization and its links with neighboring countries' systems. The construction of the railway system, as a complement to other means of transportation, played a determining role in the development of industry and especially of the steel industry. The «social savings» it afforded were however limited by the dense roadway network which attenuated what might have been the effects of a hypothetically absent railway system.
