Abstract

[eng] Abstract The German Empire presents the example of a country where the network of navigable waterways was both modernized and reorganized from the 1870's on. The renovation was however not uniform : the waterways west of the Elbe were improved more than others and within this zone, in greater numbers north of the Main. Inspite of these regional disparities, it must not be forgotten that Germany constructed one of the, if not the most extensive, innovative and standardized networks of inland navigation among the industrialized nations.
