Abstract

[eng] Abstract The Rosary fraternities very often developed earlier than the Blessed Sacrament ones. It is as if devotion to the Rosary paved the way for devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. This hypothesis will be the starting point of our study on devotional books. There is a wide variety of these, ranging from fraternity booklets of a few pages to substantial works of 200 pages, teaching a way of life. This teaching bears on three points : indulgences, prayer and devoutness. When they deal with the indulgences pertaining to the Rosary, devotional books do not simply enumerate them, they present the doctrine justifying. As far as prayer is concerned, they offer lengthy paraphrases of Pater and Ave as well as patterns of meditation for each mistery. Devoutness appears them as a constant dialogue between the faithful and God which is bound to lead to frequent communion. The Rosary devotional book aims at preparing the faithful for holy communion and above all a good confession. It would appear therefore that devotion to the Rosary is very close to devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. If the Blessed Virgin occupies the center of the scene, she felt to be, and present as, the mediator between the faithful and God.
