Abstract

[eng] Abstract History and erudition are usually presented as totally separated from each other during the Enlightenment. However a concrete case - that of the fragment VIII, 12 by Diodorus Siculus - clearly demonstrates that the dissertations written by the erudites of the French Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres were known and used by the writers of more literary histories. The work of the former was misunderstood since the beginning of the 19th century only. Then the legend of mediocre erudites who would have lived disconnected from the great cultural trends of their time was generally accepted.
