Abstract

[eng] Résumé In 1530 Archbishop Robert de Lenoncourt offered a choir tapestry depicting to life of the Virgin Mary to adorn Rheims cathedral. An iconographical study reveals the doctrinal intentions of this programme. The choice of the scenes, the interwoven texts, the symbols, tend to demonstrate the Virgin's Immaculate Conception. The episodes of the Tree of Jesse, of the Virgin's Perfections, of the Three Marys, blend old iconographical habits and new themes inspired by local lithurgy, the Pre-Reformation climate in Rheims, the Painter's renewed inspiration and the giver's intention in this programme.
