Abstract

[fre] Résumé Au delà des statistiques, l'étude des inventaires après décès permet une approche sensible des ouvriers en soie lyonnais dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Alors que les calculs les plus modérés montrent que ces hommes auraient du périr, le bonheur de créer remporte sur toutes les misères. Tant que la soie est là, vivante et créatrice, l'ouvrier accepte tout dans son minimum. On en arrive même à un minimum affectif. La vie de l'atelier évite tout excès verbal, tout débordement émotionnel ; point d'agitation et d'excès. Se contentant d'un minimum dans tous les domaines, les ouvriers en soie acceptent avec une ténacité remarquable le seuil du supportable. Dégager et analyser ce minimum affectif est au centre de cette thèse et permet de conclure que pour être « un bon canut, il y faut beaucoup d'âme ». [eng] Résumé Beyond statistics, the study of post-mortem inventories allows a sensitive approach to the silk-weavers in Lyons in the second part of the eighteenth century. Whereas the most moderate estimations show that these men should have died, creative happiness overcomes all miseries. As long as silk gives its live and creative presence, the weaver accepts a minimum in everything, even an emotional minimum. Life in a factory avoids all excessive speech, all emotional overflow ; agitation and excess are forbidden. Being content with a minimum in everything, weavers accept with a remarkable fortitude to live on the threshold of the unbearable. To define and to analyze this emotional minimum is the aim of this thesis, and it allows to draw the conclusion that to be « a good weaver required a great soul. »
