Abstract

[eng] The Rigid System which Supplies Promotions Fosters a Disequilibrium in the Labor Market - Recruitment by promotion within a firm is more frequent in large firms than in small and middle-sized firms, and in the most skilled jobs rather than in the least skilled ones. Heavy industries and banks resort to this way of recruiting more often than industries in the consumer goods, service or trade sectors. . A large majority of employees and workers prefer a "safe" career to a more risky better-paid job. Having a diploma is an asset likely to bring the holder both more training and a promotion. When executives and technicians change firms, they are less likely to do so because they have been forced than other workers; the change of employment of executives and technicians sometimes indicates a strategy aiming at compensating for the relative lack of diploma. . In total, the adjustment between the supply and the demand of labor may be interpreted in terms of career prospects. The less attractive firms, notably the middle- sized ones, suffer from competition with those which offer faster or safer careers. The lines of unemployed people are all the more difficult to reduce as the experience of unemployment itself becomes a handicap to obtaining a steady job.
