Abstract

[eng] There were as Many Employed Foreign Workers in 1990 as in 1980 - In 1 990, the foreign working population is thought to have been about 1 .7 million, that is, not much more than it was in 1 980. During the thirty postwar years of economic boom, foreign labor contributed to the rapid economic growth of the country. Today it is more vulnerable to unemployment: the unemployment rate of foreigners is twice as high as that of French people. But at the same time, the foreign working population tends to become more similar to the French one in its structure: it includes more women due to family regrouping and has an increasing number of jobs in the service sector. Hence, there is a relatively increasing proportion of wage-earners who do not work in factories (employees, intermediate jobs and executives), or who are self-employed.
