Abstract

[eng] Reading is less Attractive Than it Was Ten Years Ago - There has been a serious drop in reading over the last twenty years. The drop was particularly acute for those individuals who are still within the school system, that is, students at all levels. In 1967 practically all students read at least a book a month, compared to two thirds nowadays. For those who have left the school system, reading has dropped considerably among those who have average diplomas and those who are secondary school graduates. The others do not read much less than their olders did, or about the same: the differences between those who have higher diplomas and those who do not have any have not changed in twenty years. . The democratization of education, the weakening of the importance of parents as an example, the competition of television and other leisure activities do not account for the scope of the phenomenon. Besides, this drop in reading is part of a general pattern in which there is a drop in established cultural habits. Theater and concert hall attendance has followed the same trend.
