Abstract

[eng] In the last twenty years, France slightly increased its sporting activities - Contrary to a common notion, not everyone practises a sport. Less than half of the French participated in a sporting activity at least once in 1988, and only one out of five once a week. . In the last twenty years, France increased its sporting activities only slightly and the the variety of those sports widened. The most popular sports are essentially leisure- time activities: bicycling, skiing, walking of hiking, tennis and gymnastics. These activities are in general easy to master and can be practised all year round, at all ages, and both individually or with the family. . The spread of sporting activities affects more and more the middle classes, young adults and groups which until now were not very interested in sports, such as women and holder adults. On the other hand, low-income families still do not become highly involved in these types of activity. . All things considered, the typical portrait of the sportsman has not changed very much in the last twenty years. He is still a male student from a well-to-do family.
