Abstract

[eng] Salaries and Careers of Graduate Engineers. The Ranking of the Grandes Ecoles - There are wide gaps between the salaries of graduate engineers. The top ten per cent of the best paid engineers earn three times as much as those in the bottom ten per cent. The major factors causing this disparity are an engineer's level in the hierarchy, the school he graduated from and his professional experience. . Other things being equal, an engineer's level in the hierarchy and his professional experience are the factors which are best financially rewarded. On the other hand, seniority in the firm is much less valued than professional experience. The grande école (a top level engineering school) from which an engineer graduates, carries with it a specific bonus: at the top of the list are the école polytechnique and the Paris école des mines, whose status is slightly higher than the following group (Ponts, Centrale, Supelec, etc). . More than four graduate engineers out of five state that they are satisfied with their professional position and most of them do not plan to change jobs. As a result, the population of graduate engineers is rather static.
