Abstract

[eng] Heirs and Heritage - In 1 984, one death out of two led to a declaration of succession and 763,000 people received an inheritance. The amount inherited was a net average of 1 22,000 francs. This sum was not negligible, since it corresponded to the yearly income of a household. . Half of the net legacies were less than 50,000 francs and 10 % were higher than 282,000 francs. The amounts bequeathed were very unevenly distributed : the « wealthier » half of the theirs received 91 % of the total legacies. . In 55 % of the cases, the theirs were heiresses. On the average, they were 50 year's old and received a net sum of 1 19,000 francs each. The men received a net sum of 1 26,000 francs and were four years younger. 74 % of the amounts bequeathed came from the parents. Two co-heirs received slightly less than half of What a single heir received, and three co-heirs received 2.3 times less than a single one. . Inheriting from a father who was a farmer or a self-employed worker, meant receiving twice as much as inheriting from a workman, an employee, a middle executive or a pensioner.
