Abstract

[eng] Wage-earners in 1967, fifteen years later - From 1967 to 1982, a large number of wage-earners moved to another working sector of the economy, another region or, more significant, into another socioprofessional category. Most of the time, they went up in the social hierarchy. They were seldom demoted, though a loss in the level of qualification was not exceptional among older wage-earners. Mobility from one sector and from one region to another, was the higher among younger wage-earners. . Salaries reflected the evolution of a career. Those who improved their qualifications also bettered their position compared to the "stable" employees who remained in the same social category. More surprisingly, the former could already boast higher salaries in 1967. A change in the type of activity also had an effect on salaries. All other things being equal, salaries were higher in industry and transport than in other sectors, but the situation of wage-earners who remained in the same type of activity was almost always better than that of those who were to change in the future. Geographic mobility reflected essentially the opposition of Paris versus the provinces. However, among provincials who came to work in or near the capital, those who were older than 35 in 1967 already had a salary that was close to that of Parisians.
