Abstract

[eng] The intellectual level of young people keeps rising - The intellectual level of draftees has been continually increasing for about three decades. First, a much larger number of them hold degrees. Secondly, for the same level of education, the scores of tests taken prior to military service are as good, if not better, than they used to be. . Contrary to a widely-accepted notion, the level of those who hold the highest degrees has not dropped : those in possession of a baccalauréat (an exam given at the end of secondary school) score as well as those of fifteen years ago, even though they are twice as numerous. Alarmist statements about the increase of illiteracy are not justified either - not only are there fewer draftees without degrees, but those who don't have degrees now score higher on the tests. On the other hand, there is a real drop in scores for those young men who have left secondary school before obtaining their baccalauréat. These tests, of course, are only taken by young men. If young women were taken into account, the conclusions would probably be even more optimistic.
