Abstract

[eng] Suicide and social rhythms - Besides the connections studied in the preceding article, statistics demonstrate certain constants in the frequency of suicides. Some had already been brought to light a century ago, for example the increase in the number of suicides in the spring, after a low point in winter. But, some evolutions have recently become apparent, such as the accentuated decrease in the month of August, followed by a resumption in September. This change is very certainly directly linked to the new rhythms of social life, and, in particular, with the institutional ization of paid vacations. During the week, after a high point on Monday, the number of suicides decreases with regularity until Sunday. This weekly profile, like the annual profile, is a manifestation of the drop in suicides during non-work periods, which is also a time of a tightening of family ties.
