Abstract

[eng] Pharmacies : A Sector in which Growth Continues - The pharmacy sector holds a special place in the retail business sector. Competition, prices and margins of profit are regulated in a very precise manner. If one looks at the recent evolution of the sector, the situation of pharmacies proves to be relatively good. Their turnover (before taxes) has gone up at an annual rate of 13.3 % from 1971 to 1979. Given the rise in prices, this corresponds to a growth of 7 % in volume. This has lead to a rapid development in the sector, both in terms of the number of outlets and in personnel. This has not been at the expense of gains in productivity. In fact, the blocking of the rate of marginal profit associated with the relatively weak price rise, has lead pharmacists to rationalize their management. Overall, although the share of salaries in the gross margin has grown, the gross operational excédant has continued to rise in volume.
