Abstract

[eng] Diversification of Businesses - Using the whole of the Fusion index for the year 1976, the authors analysed the strength and consequences of multiple production in the same firm. The Fusion index gathers together all the available information on the results and activities of some 33,000 French firms with more than 20 employees. A first point that was noted is that multiproduction is the rule and not the exception, as it involves nearly one firm out of two. It shows up most often as a second commercial activity, especially when it concerns a small or middle range firm. If trading activities are excluded, several poles of interest appear for the industrial sector. These latter often turn out to be subsidiary companies. In this case, as soon as a firm becomes diversified, it tends to do it in a strong fashion, and this is all the more true for larger firms. As to the impact of diversification on the accounting results, it varies according to the sectors and appears more clearly in those areas that have been in difficulty. Overall, the profit objectives in the short term do not seem to play a role.
