Abstract

[eng] The production apparatus of major industrial groups in 1972 - In this article, the author, basing his analysis on data provided in the INSEE's yearly survey of firms, attempts to show the essential characteristics of the production apparatus of 18 groups in 1972. Two initial limits have been set: first, only firms established in France will be considered, and, second, the firms treated must exercise an industrial activity. The statistical analysis of the activities of groups reveals that they tend to concentrate their forces (staff, investment and the like) on a small number of sectors, and often on a single sector. Then, using this « sectorial position » as their base, they proceed to integrate and diversify. Throughout this process, groups give special attention to the possibilities opened up by new regional implantations. Although groups do allow firms to have a coherent strategy in terms of their choice of activity and their options for expansion, it does not necessarily follow that they manage their firms more efficiently. The final part of the article is devoted to a treatment of this problem.
