Abstract

[eng] The importance of certificates for up grading by Jacqueline FRISCH . The survey made by I.N.S.E.E. in 1964 on training and professional qualifications is used here to study the correlation between the possession of a certificate and « upgrading » defined as the movement from one social status category of wage-earners to a higher one. The survey highlights the great importance of certificates, a veritable insurance against the risk of falling back, but also the influence of other criteria such as change of firm, age, etc. Certain professional certificates may be a bar to further upgrading, once a certain level in the hierarchy has been attained. This risk is mainly run by women. Differences may be observed between large and small firms.
